Intro: I’m the third, often most conspicuous and unknown McCarney brother. My older brother Mike designs, Pat takes care of business and keeps the family in check, and I’m currently studying art in New York. I spent the last 3 years living in France and Switzerland enjoying the fine food and women Europe had to offer. My name is Shawn Alexander McCarney, and its time to share a tale or two.
A week ago I get a message from Pat asking if I know Ricky Powell, and less than a week later I find myself sitting on the street at dusk chatting to the legendary photographer himself. Ricky has recently had a tribute issue of “Frank” released and wanted to personally sign one for the Akomplice crew. The man loves our New York Crimes hat and literally wears the thing everywhere. We chatted for about an hour in what he called his “makeshift office” which was a fire hydrant on the corner of 18th street and 6th avenue, where he discovered how uneducated I was in old school hip-hop. “You’re a nice kid, but you don’t know shit. We’ll have to educate you.” It’s funny because that’s what my brother says to me all the time. Some things never change.
